What are EHS regulations in the European Union?
Environmental, Health, and Safety regulations in the EU stem primarily from the EU Framework Directive and emphasize workplace safety, risk prevention, training, chemical safety, and environmental protection. EU-OSHA directives and the REACH regulation are particularly relevant, as are newer directives aimed at increasing corporate sustainability and GHG emissions reporting (namely, the CSRD).
Do EU EHS regulations apply to non‑EU companies?

Companies that have operations located in the EU, use EU-based suppliers, import products into the EU, or otherwise wish to enter the EU market must generally comply with European EHS regulations.

What happens if a company is not EHS compliant in the EU?
Failing to comply with EHS regulations as laid out by EU member states can result in financial penalties—fixed daily amounts and turnover-based fines—operational shutdowns, product bans and recalls, and even imprisonment of company leaders.
What is REACH and who must comply with it?

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation is an EU law that aims to protect humans and the surrounding environment from recognized chemical risks. It achieves this objective by mandating manufacturers and importers of chemical substances to gather information on the properties of said substances and register them with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), as well as by phasing out or restricting substances of very high concern.

What is CLP classification and labelling?
The Classification, Labelling, and Packaging of chemicals (CLP) law of the EU tells suppliers how they must communicate the health, safety, and environmental hazards found in their products, namely, by following the guidelines established in the UN's Global Harmonized System (GHS). It applies to almost all chemical substances and mixtures supplied within the EU, regardless of tonnage, and is exercised through the use of labels including hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard and precautionary statements, and supplier and product details.
